Con of Thrones 2019

For three days mid-July, 2019, Nashville Tennessee played host to the third Con of Thrones. (If the name doesn’t make it clear, this is a convention for fans of HBO’s Game of Thrones – as well as the book series the show is based on.)

The convention returned to Nashville where it debuted in 2017 after spending 2018 in Dallas, Texas. As a resident of the East Coast, I was happy that the convention was once again within driving distance.

This year’s featured guest was the Kingslayer himself, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, along with Jerome Flynn who played the upwardly-mobile sellsword Bronn on the show. Returning guests included Hannah “Gilly” Murray and Miltos Yerolemou, who taught Arya Stark to water dance as Syrio Forel and has given fencing workshops at all previous Con of Thrones.

Guests aside, the convention featured a tremendous amount programming in the form of discussion panels. Con of Thrones has always had a great deal of fan engagement, not only in the audience attending panels covering various topics related to the show and books, but also in the wide variety of fan-expert panelists. The panels were stacked with entertainment writers, authors, podcasters, Reddit moderators, bloggers, YouTubers, cosplayers, lawyers, therapists, and actors.

Judging Jaime

Tonight is the penultimate Game of Thrones episode, of the season and of the series. Right down to the wire, the good folks at Watchers on the Wall graciously allowed me to publish a feature article about last week’s episode, talking about one of the more controversial characters. The Kingslayer.

Ser Jaime, like John Shaft I can dig it) is a complicated man.

We’re past the second episode of Season Eight Game of Thrones, and therefore we’ve seen 1/3rd of the final episodes. It’s going by so fast.

Soon we’ll only have our memories to sustain us. (And rewatches. And unpublished books. And people debating on blogs and Reddit for years.)

But speaking about memories … on the Watchers on the Wall website, I’ve just published another feature article talking about the recent episode, and specifically the exchange between Bran Stark and Sam Tarly where Bran asserts that he is the memory of the world.

The scene offered a lot to unpack and I only scratched the surface, to be honest. But I discuss what it means for the Night King to be targeting Bran, what an endless night might mean in this nuanced context, etc.

Season Eight of Game of Thrones has finally started, and now our watch begins. The fine folks at the Watchers on the Wall are agreeably continuing to publish features written by yours truly, and my latest essay is on the site, talking about the events of the first episode of this final season.

The Night King is on his way, and it looks like our favorite Starks, Targaryens, and Lannisters might be too busy squabbling to resist him. And that’s okay.

We are just under three months away from the final season of Game of Thrones!

Mercifully, April 14th is just around the corner. (I’m kidding – it feels like an eternity.) Our favorite (surviving) characters will be returning, as well as new characters among the famed Golden Company sellswords that Cersei hopes will preserve her hold on Westeros.

Good luck with that, your Grace.

Over on the Watchers on the Wall website, my go-to site for Game of Thrones news, I recently published a feature speculatively talking about the Golden Company and the likely story elements that they will bring with them from Essos.

2019 is finally here, with the final season of Game of Thrones on the horizon. I’m hoping to write feature articles for the Game of Thrones fan site Watchers on the Wall during the last months of the hiatus and then while the show is airing. (I can put out one a month until the show comes back, but then I’d better go weekly, exploring some insight from each episode.)

Over on Watchers on the Wall, I currently have a feature article speculating on what might be happening with Tyrion Lannister in Season Eight, by looking at significant events that have already unfolded in his narrative and then applying the performance Rule of Threes.

Here Lies Melisandre…

We’re a month closer to the premiere of the final season of Game of Thrones! Since I’m trying to get something Westeros-related written every month until the show airs (when I hope to have weekly content) – this month I was inspired by the longer and longer December nights to write something about Melisandre of Asshai, for the Watchers on the Wall website.

In her last appearance on the show, Melisandre hinted about a significant event that’ll be happening – most likely – in Season Eight, and I did some exhausting (if not totally exhaustive) speculation on that.

For three days at the tail end of May (May 25th through May 28th) Dallas, Texas played host to the second ever Con of Thrones.

I attended last year’s inaugural convention (I wrote about that here) and wanted to update everyone on how things progressed from the first convention to its second event.

Based on the climactic events at the end of Season Seven of Game of Thrones (if you’re reading this, I assume you know what happened) it seemed a good time to talk about the White Walkers, and what might be motivating them.

But you won’t find my thoughts here. I’ve posted them on the Watchers on the Wall website. Like I sometimes do.

As I sometimes do, I have a feature article on the Watchers on the Wall site, talking about Game of Thrones.

I’ll be talking about Littlefinger, the scheming mastermind, but also about Catelyn Stark, not only as the reason for him kicking off his ambitious plans, but also for the end of them. Feel free to check it out.
