Hey, I sometimes talk about comic books or movies/television based on comic books here on my blog, because I enjoy reading comics (or graphic novels if my saying comic books makes you roll your eyes. )

Yes, I’m a grown-ass man, but there seems in general to be less of a stigma for people to talk about enjoying stories presented in a serialized, visual format. Or at least, I thought so. But October had some weird news relating to comics, and I thought I’d kick some of that around.

Happy Batman Day! I didn’t even know Batman Day was a thing until last year, when it had already passed (but I wrote up a long post about Batman after the fact and promised I’d try to keeping having something timely about the Caped Crusader going forward.)

Straight up, I thought Batman Day was going to happen later this month, so I was surprised when I visited my favorite comic shop this week and discovered that Batman Day, like Batman does, had snuck up on me. But I’d made a promise to write about Batman, so here it is.

This post might seem a bit random and rambly, but so do the ones I plan out months in advance, to be honest.

Way back when, I wrote something about Netflix’s new series Daredevil. It had just started, I hadn’t seen much of it, so I talked a bit about Daredevil from the comics, how it was influential on other things I read, etc.

That Zod-Damned Man of Steel…

In case you’re behind in your viewing of movies featuring the Last Son of Krypton, this post will contain some spoilers. If spoilers are your kryptonite, get behind a lead wall now! (Or don’t read…)

Zod: Spoiler Vision… ACTIVATE!
Superman: Don’t look, Zod! Great Scott, don’t loooooook!!!!!

The movie I’m going to talk about has been out for ages, so the speed (and timeliness) of my reviews clearly aren’t faster than a speeding bullet. But since next year will be featuring a new Superman movie (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) it’s not really a bad time to talk about that Zod-murdering Superman.

Last week was International Batman Day! If I’d been on top of things, I’d have had this post written last week, for the actual day.

The-Dark-Knight-Returns

The Dark Knight does not respect my tardiness.

I don’t know who chooses these dates, but I’m grateful to whomever arranged for a day to celebrate one of my favorite mythological heroes (even if I was unprepared.)

Mythological heroes?

I apologize to any classical Greek and Roman humanities scholars for equating Batman alongside Achilles and Hercules, but I wouldn’t be surprised if colleges in the future have courses on 20th century heroic archetypes like the guardian of Gotham City.

Trust me when I say that some intense fighting is about to happen.

My wife and I just finished watching the second episode of Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix. Yay Netflix!

I’ll probably write something more in-depth and specific to the new series later on (after I’ve seen it all,) but I wanted to talk a little bit now about the handicapable hero.

I’m hoping, really hoping, that the next book in George R R Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series comes out this summer. But until then, I’ll be re-reading some excellent fantasy. Starting with the adventures of this little guy.

Should you not recognize him, that’s Fone Bone, the diminuative protagonist from Jeff Smith’s epic fantasy graphic novel series Bone.

What I’m Reading Now: A Metric Ton of Comics

Okay, maybe not a literal ton (or tonne, since I did say “metric”) – but I do have a large backlog of comics to get through.

Over the weekend, I went to see the new Spider-Man movie (the second one featuring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.)

My daughter, who hadn’t seen the first one, really wanted to see ASM2 because of the rumored X-Men: Days of Future Past tease in the movie’s end credits. (My not-yet-quite-a-teen daughter is a big Jennifer Lawrence fan.)

Keeping my fanboy glee hidden, I agreed.

“If you *really* want to see it, I guess I’ll go see this ‘Spidery Man‘ movie.”

Spoilery thoughts below. Seriously, if you haven’t seen the movie, don’t read my post.
