Okay, like most people who blog, I get delighted when I get comments. I am rarely delighted however when a spam comment makes it through WordPress’ otherwise excellent spam filter. A few days ago, I was delighted.

I Totally Look Like This When I’m Blogging, Just Ask My Wife.

My email let me know that my blog post Defending Magic in Game of Thrones had a comment waiting for moderation. Right on. It’s a great post! (I might be biased.) But I was unprepared for the effusive praise in the comment.

Sadly, it was from a spammer. Pretty obviously. I’ve seen similar bits in the spam folder of my blog, all designed to flatter the blogger into approving the comment in the hopes that it’d get approved and expose the thread to a flood of unmoderated spam.

(Checking out my blog’s spam folder taught me how *not* to leave a comment when visiting a blog I liked.)

But this spam comment was pretty over the top, so with no further ado, here is the comment awating moderation:

(They should also check out my article on Religion in Game of Thrones. Seven Hells!)

Clearly, this spammer is my number one fan. Rather than sending one of their stock bogus complimentary comments, they sent over two dozen in one mega-comment.

So sincere was the praise, it overwhelmed the WordPress gaussian distribution spam filter.

That’s love, man.

I’m touched and now have got the warm fuzzies.

Thanks, you.

I’m still not approving the comment. But keep coming back. I’ll continue “putting up.” And thanks for being a fan of my Game of Thrones stuff.

I make some claims to the text here, but obviously not to the featured comment from Robocop Hack who apparently resides at

I have to give them full credit for their wonderful spam -filter-evading love letter to me. Bravo!

  2. Pat you’re awesome… I’ve gotten a few like these and just sent them to spam and then emptied the spam folder, but never have I seen one so epic it deserved it’s own blog post, well done, I shall now recall to myself at at later time to revisit both the posts and sections of comments therefore 😉

    • 🙂 Hey Shannon, thanks for the compliments. If anyone deserves to be sent crazy epic spam, it’s Your Blog! (Hmmm, please take that in a positive light… you know what I mean.)

I was thinking a month or so ago that I’d just cut and paste out of the spam folder a collection of the kind of spam messages, because they’re interesting.

But then, as if by divine providence, Spamela McSpamalot sent me that monolithic “Master Peace”, it would be wrong not to share it with the rest of the Internet.

      Thanks again, you!

Wow. That is some comment. I have one that works in a similar way to overwhelm the filter now and then, but it’s better-written. It’s a good, solid paragraph that’s written to come across as a non-American person looking for information on women’s rights. Pops up regularly on my sister’s blog and on my Friday feminism discussion threads. Always a different IP address and promoting a different link. Presumably, that last is to get around the IP/username/email/URL blocking.

I thought it might be genuine the first time I saw it – I honestly wasn’t sure. But I’ve seen five or six iterations of it now. It’s just weird.

    • Gene, that’s interesting that it’s so targeted and crafted to be relevant and a spam comment. Insidious!

I’m just glad the Bayesian algorithm (I think I called it Gaussian in my article, which I’m now sure is the wrong term, but I’m keeping it in to show what a clown I am) WordPress uses to filter out spam works as well as it does.

Thanks for following my blog, by the way, I’ll be checking out your stuff and your colleagues articles, thanks again.
